There are several basic steps of quilting for completing a quilt whether you are a beginner quilter or an advanced quilter.. . Each of these areas define a separate step of the quilt process. Every step is important, and some of these steps might NOT be included in YOUR first quilt.
As a quilter since the late 1970's, I hand quilted many quilts. Took about a year for each bed sized quilt! While I loved the process of hand-quilting, it frustrated me that I couldn't get more quilts completed.
In 2001, I took my first longarm quilting class. My first experience on the longarm, I custom quilted this applique quilt. That meant I mostly did 'squiggles' and quilted around the applique pieces. After that first experience I was hooked.!
Fabric (squares or strips) and quilt block swaps are one of the best ways to build your stash*. I have been swapping blocks or fabrics* almost 30 years. Traded everything from fat quarters, to strips to quilt blocks.**

I belong to a IO group that is starting a QAL (quilt a long) starting January 11, 2021 to 'enable' us to work on and complete a Trail Mix Quilt. This is a quilt that I have admired for years and years, but never had time to work on it, due to working at my 'day job'. Now, am in my second retirement, and can spend time with these great fabric stash-busting projects.
